How would you like to hear a radio promo from 3 decades ago…that spotlighted radio from 3 decades ago? Confused? In late 1972, Bill and Becky Ann Stewart sold their beloved WPBC Radio to Fairchild Communications. The call letters and format of both the AM and FM stations were immediately changed. The AM became WYOO and adopted an Oldies format.
When WYOO first came on the air, they ran station promos which featured snippets of old radio shows from the 1930s and 40s. The promos were done in-house, voiced by airstaffers “Tall” Robert Hall and “Sweet Michael” O’Shea. Robert would open the promo, followed by old radio audio clips. Then, Sweet Michael would finish it with “Rad-i-Old, Niiiinety Eight!”
This was recorded from Apple Valley, MN using a Spartan/Atlantic “shoebox” recorder with built-in AM radio. The aircheck was forever preserved onto an Audio Magnetics “bag” cassette tape and appears here for your listening pleasure:
