WXXL-FM 106.7 Orlando FL Doc & Johnny 1991

Doc & Johnny with “The XL Morning Zoo.”  I wish I had more of them, but this was captured during a quick dial scan.  They mention that Hildi is coming up next.  You can hear her at the beginning of the JJ Whispers spot.  I’ve always thought Hildi has a fantastic voice.  She was doing middays at KISS 105 in Gainesville during the time I was doing nights on WTRS in Ocala.  This was recorded shortly after she came to XL106.7.

Back to Doc & Johnny: You’ll hear a couple of short breaks plus the custom “XL Morning Zoo” sweeper.  Notice this was before WXXL was relicensed to Tavares.  They’re still ID’ing as Leesburg, which was their original city of license.

Reception was made from my place, 6 miles south of Ocala, using a Realistic AM/FM/CD/cassette portable stereo and Sony LN 90 tape.  A medium sized TV antenna with the VHF-LO elements cut to resonance for FM was pointed towards the WXXL transmitter for optimum signal strength.

who’s the man who did the jingles voice over in those years for xl106.7 (in this example he kicks of at the beginning of the mp3). I want him for my station, but don’t know his name.
    Could anyone help me out?

    Hi Bert,

That’s Mitch Craig. He voiced many CHR stations of all market sizes in the late 1980s-early 1990s. Today, he does all formats. What a great voice! His website is: http://www.mitchcraig.com

Furthermore, the rise of dance music, early hip-hop, hair bands and adult rock compounded the station’s struggles. The station began broadcasting under the “WXXL” callsign in December 17, 1990, as it was to become Orlando’s new CHR radio station for the Central Florida area.

Just 4 months later, Nationwide flipped WBJW-FM 105.1 flipped from CHR “BJ105” to Hot AC “Mix 105.” The calls became WOMX, of course. My first week in Florida just happened to be the week it changed. Doc and Johnny on XL kept mentioning “Cryin’ Brian” over at “Mixed-Up 105.” That was in reference to former PD Brian Thomas who was fired as part of the format flip. Early 90s radio wars!
