WQHK-AM 1380 Fort Wayne IN Overnights 1983

WQHK has been a Country powerhouse in Fort Wayne for as long as anyone can remember. Today, most folks know them as “K105”, broadcasting at 105.1 on the FM band. But WQHK was originally on 1380AM. I was fortunate enough to be able to hear them at night, although with a pretty good noise floor. 1380 was a busy frequency in my area. I managed to snag this quick aircheck when WQHK was at maximum “bounce” and thus on top of the pile of stations on the channel. Does anyone know who the jock is here?

This was received from Apple Valley, Minnesota, using a Pioneer SX-3900 receiver and horizontal longwire antenna. The recording was made using a Technics stereo cassette deck and a TDK D90 tape.

Both the day and night patterns put a similar and fairly broad lobe north-northwest over the city of Fort Wayne; by day, there’s a similar lobe pointing south-southeast, and both patterns have deep nulls to the east-northeast and west-southwest, protecting signals that at the time would have included WSPD 1370 in Toledo and KWK 1380 in St. Louis. As exciting as the venture into radio must have been for WKJG, there were soon even bigger projects on the horizon.
