KWKR-FM 99.9 Garden City KS Cindy Olson Everett Green 1985

This recording was made completely by accident. I had just completed my last show on ‘The Fine Ninety-Nine-Nine.’ Being the radio geek that I am, of course I airchecked what I thought would be my last broadcast in Western Kansas. Not only did I aircheck, but I pulled the ‘remote’ plug out of the studio skimmer deck. This allowed the tape to roll continuously, instead of stopping when the mic was shut off. My show ended at 4:50, followed by CBS Radio Radio News and then local news. Cindy Olson took over from 5-10PM. During her first break, she had a remote from one of the local stereo stores. Everett Green used to be on-air at KWKR, so he knew the ropes. He had left earlier that year for a position with Stereo Factory.

In all the confusion of it being my last day, I forgot to remove my aircheck tape from the skimmer when my show was over.  There happened to be just enough tape left to catch this hilarious exchange between Cindy and Everett.  I’m sure they both wish that I had used a shorter cassette!

Ohhhh Drew. Of all the times to let the tape roll. I didn’t put a stopwatch on that little blurb, but I’m guessing Stereo Factory wasn’t paying for all the airtime they got.

On one hand, I cringe because that wasn’t really the best sample of me “on the air”. But, on the other hand, I am thankful that you were so veracious about running airchecks (and not only for yourself). Otherwise, I’m afraid there wouldn’t be much tape of me on the air. I didn’t do it enough, and of course now I really wish I would have.

Thanks for the memory my friend!!

That’s awesome, Drew…I remember Stereo Factory, and of course, listening to Everett and Cindy in the ‘Fine 99’s heyday. It was a great time back then, as all things were still new and fresh, and what better way to represent that, than with this fun clip from 2 of the best personalities. Thanks for sharing!
