KVAA-AM 910 Brookings South Dakota 1983

KV91 was one of those fun little small market CHRs.  Licensed to Volga, it primarily served nearby Brookings which is the home of South Dakota State University.  I believe at some point, they began simulcasting with their FM sister station on 102.3.  But since you can hear the “KV91” jingle in this aircheck, the AM station was still dominant at this point in time.

Can you make out what the DJ is saying, after the Pretenders’ “Back on the Chain Gang?”  It sounds like “And now, if you place your hands on your radio…this is KVAA, Volga…(something something) most (something something) radio station.”  Since they were only 500 watts and I was about 200 miles away in Apple Valley, MN, I couldn’t hear them very well.

Reception was made using a Pioneer SX-3900 receiver with a horizontal longwire antenna.  A Technics stereo cassette deck and TDK D90 tape was used for the recording.

Can’t make it out, but I used to listen to KV91 on the tractor when I was a kid. Chad Mackenzie used to work there (Chad Scott) and so did Adam North.

Yeah, I know it’s weak and hard to understand. I’m surprised I could hear it at all since WSUI in Iowa City usually owns 910 at night in the Twin Cities.
