KSTT-AM 1170 Davenport IA Rock Island IL 1982

KSTT was the Quad Cities’ Top 40 AM which survived into the 1980s.  This station was a regular nighttime visitor up in Minnesota.  They were only 1,000 watts into six towers, but since their main lobe was pointed towards me, they came in pretty well.  I believe the other station which you can hear faintly in the background is KVOO in Tulsa.

This short aircheck was recorded from Apple Valley, MN, using a Pioneer SX-3900 receiver with horizontal longwire antenna.  A Technics stereo cassette deck and Scotch Dynarange cassette was used to make the recording.

This aircheck was in fact from 1983 and the voice you hear is overnite dj Charlie Ray. BTW, Charlie was working at “Country Sunshine” 1270 WHBF in 1982. I started at KSTT in November, ’82 and Charlie hadn’t arrived yet. JUST to set the record str8.

Thanks, Bryan! The source tape for this was an old cassette that was labeled “AM DX October 1982.” It was stored and forgotten about for several years. The KSTT clip is near the end of the tape. So, I’m guessing this was added later. Probably the winter/spring of 1983. I know it’s before August, 1983, because that’s when I moved to Burlington, Colorado for my first radio job at KNAB AM/FM. In Eastern Colorado, 1170 is all Tulsa at night.
