KPRM-FM 97.5 Park Rapids MN Ed Dave De La Hunt 1983

I snagged this aircheck during an ice storm in February, 1983.  The resulting atmospheric enhancement allowed me to hear KPRM-FM from my location 175 miles away from their transmitter.  Co-channel KNXR in Rochester usually prevented this station from being heard.  It was tough to separate these stations since Park Rapids was on roughly the same “beam axis” to me as was Rochester.  Even with the enhancement, you can hear some white noise and interference caused by KNXR.

At the beginning of this recording, you can hear the two stations fighting for the frequency.  KNXR appears to be winning the battle.  But I was able to pull KPRM out from underneath by being patient with my rotor and getting just the right beam angle.

Ed De La Hunt has owned KPRM since it first went on-the-air in 1962.  His children have taken turns behind the microphone as well.  Ed voices the spot for Self-Serv, then I believe David does the Legal ID as he segues back into a sporting event.  Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but it sounds like David’s voice to me.

This was received from Apple Valley, MN, using a Pioneer SX-3900 receiver, Winegard 10 element FM yagi antenna, Alliance U-100 Tenna Rotor, and Belden RG59 ultra low loss coaxial cable.  The recording was made onto a Technics stereo cassette deck and TDK SA90 tape.

That’s Ed alright. I can’t verify if that’s David, I think he would have been pretty young in ’83. I worked for Ed on KPRM from around Aug 1984-the spring of 1985. Did play by play for Nevis Tiger Football, Evening air shift Mon- Sat.
Dan Allen was the morning guy weekdays, took me under his wing. I wish I knew what happened to Dan. Fred was the sales guy, Jane Verba was the office gal. I wish I could have made it on $3.00 an hour.
