KMGK-FM 93.3 Des Moines Iowa Craig Lee 1982

Des Moines’ KMGK was a frequent visitor to my listening shack in Apple Valley, MN.  I’m not sure whether they had yet migrated to the tall tower near Alleman (?)  In any case, if I pointed my antenna SSW (providing enough of a “side angle” to null out co-channel WIZM/La Crosse, WI), KMGK was usually there.

KMGK was doing a basic CHR format at this time.  However, they were not using the “Magic 93” moniker.  It was simply “93FM, KMGK.”  Craig Lee did the evening show.  KMGK was one of three Des Moines FM stations which enjoyed substantial listenership in these days.  (The other two were KGGO-94.9 and KRNQ-102.5.)  AM radio was still very viable in Iowa’s capital city with KIOA, WHO, KRNT, KSO, and WOI from neighboring Ames.

I received KMGK using a Pioneer SX-3900 receiver, Winegard 10 element FM yagi antennna, Alliance U-100 Tenna Rotor, and Belden RG59 ultra low loss coaxial cable.  This aircheck tape was made using a Technics stereo deck and Scotch Dynarange 90 cassette.
